My journey becoming a Unity game developer: Make a game look beautiful- Adding Terminals in the Control Room
Objective: Add equipment to the Control Room using terminals, monitors, stairs, and Test tubes.
Now we can start populating the Control Room with some terminals, test tubes, and monitors to give the appearance of people working here. Drag Scifi Terminal 08 object into the Scene placing the terminal in the middle of the floor. Scale the size of this terminal along its 3 axes about another half-meter larger to make the terminal look more appropriate. Duplicate this terminal 2 more times, place them on each side of the middle terminal.
Rotate the 2 terminals surrounding the middle terminal to face the walls nearest them. Rotate the middle terminal to face the hallway area. Place the 2 outer terminals directly next to the middle terminal.
Next, let’s add terminal monitors above the terminals themselves. Drag in the Scifi Terminal 09 object into the Scene above the middle terminal. Raise it up high enough over the terminal where the player character has to look up. Make sure to rotate the monitor to face the direction towards the hallway.
Duplicate the terminal monitor 2 times, and place them over the outer terminals. Rotate these 2 monitors at an angle to face the corner of the 2 nearest walls towards the hallway area.
Now we will add a little more life to the room by inserting Test Tubes. Drag Scifi Test tube 03 into the Scene behind the middle terminal near the wall for now. We will position this terminal up in the air along its Y-axis as we will build a platform for it to stand on soon. Duplicate this Test tube 2 more times, and place them on each side of the original Test tube object.
Scale the terminals to make them twice their original size giving these tubes a more intimidating appearance.
Let’s add more equipment to the Control Room that will give the appearance that the workers have to check in to use the terminals. Download Scifi Terminal 07 asset to be used in the Control Room.
Drag the Scifi Terminal 07 object into the Scene, positioning it along the corner of the hallway’s entrance into the room. Rotate this terminal to face the opposite side of the hallway’s wall. Scale the terminal around half-meter larger as well to make it look compatible with the player character. Duplicate 2 more, then place one on each side of the room against the middle wall area.
We’re going to add stairs which will be used to walk up to the platform where the Test tubes will be located. Download Scifi Stair 01 and 02 objects which will be 2 different sizes of stairs.
Let’s use Scifi Stair 01 for walking up to the platform. Drag it into the Scene, scale it down along its 3 axes around 35%, and position it at the back wall area lined up with the terminal. Duplicate this stair, rotate it to face the opposite wall, and position it by the opposite terminal.
To create a platform, select the 6 floor tiles beneath the Test tubes and duplicate them. Move the platform up to match the height of the stairs, and move the stairs to have the top step aligned with the platform. Position the 3 Test tubes on top of the platform on each floor tile.
To make the Test tubes appearance stand out more, duplicate another floor tile and place it attached in front of the middle tile. Place the middle Test tube on top of this new platform tile so this Test tube stands out more to the viewer’s eye.
To make the front middle platform tile stand out more, add the Scifi Walls Base 02 object on top of the tile. Duplicate this Base 02 object, and rotate it to have the long painted stripe attached to each other. Scale it up to make to make it more obvious that is supporting the middle Test tube from the rest of the platform.
One last thing to make the scene look a little better, select all 3 Scifi Terminal 09 objects, and increase their scale along the 3 axes to be double the size. We will also raise them a bit more higher so they stand out from the main terminals.
